Oak and Chestnut seedling update #1 post nut removal about a week later

About a week after removing all the nuts from the oak and chestnut seedlings, things are looking good. Still need to go to Home Depot and get some Osmocote but other than that seedlings are growing good.
Removing the nut from my seedling trees to avoid predators
Переглядів 21114 днів тому
If you grow outside you can remove the nut from your oaks and chestnuts early. I usually do this after the second full sized leaf has appeared but you could do it a little sooner if you had to. This is to help guard against predation but if you’ll notice I’ve already lost a chestnut due to something nipping it off at the base. frustrating

Had this lone sow come to the remote trap the other night. Thought some more might come in a little later but they never did. Regardless this is a good catch as it removes a breeding age sow from the population. We didn’t weight her but estimate to be around 150 lbs.

Pawpaw tree update request- late summer
I would probably pull off the female flowers or the burs when they form. When trees are still pretty young I try to pick off any nut/fruit starting to from so that the tree just focuses water and nutrients on increasing growth instead of production. This may not be the right thing to do or a good thing to do but to me it makes sense and it has never caused me any problems.
This is what I’m thinking as well. I appreciate the input.
Cool video! Thanks for sharing. Something I have been told that is great for getting trees to increase flower/catkin production is adding Boron to the soil. Your soil may could use it and it may not need it. Just wanted to share as it seems boron greatly increases flower production. ( I have seen it used for chestnuts and oaks I am not sure about fruit trees but I assume it would work as well). Look into this if you ever get some time, you may want to try it. Love the videos, keep it up!!
I’ve never heard of using boron. I’ll have to do some research and check it out. Thanks for the info I really appreciate it.
You don't want my advice. I'm 21 and 0 for chestnuts. I've decided my place has more trees than I need already.
Awe man don’t give up. What happened to them? Drought?
@@MattPatterson1411 They're jinxed. Planted 7, my brother in law had a heart attack. I went to take care of him during the time they needed steady watering. The next year, I planted 7 more. When they needed water most, he died on a camping trip in New Mexico. The next year, I planted 7 more. Same time of year, my daughter had an emergency liver transplant and we kept her 3 year old while she recovered. I can take a hint.
My chestnuts are dead or dying from all this rain. They turned brown and all the leaves fell off. Last year was the complete opposite with no rain. Storm came through last week and broke off a very big apple tree 3’ off the ground, broke my 9’ pawpaw at the ground line, broke my Fuju persimmon in half and 3 old peach trees. Broke a lot of limbs in my pecans and blew a huge willow tree over on my neighbors property. The ground was solid white with hail. That destroyed my garden and 16 varieties of figs with their big leaves. I’d rather have this flooding than no rain if I had to choose between the 2. My well water looks like tea. Does that every time we get floods. I drink it and survive.
Yeah, I'm through with chestnuts on my Red River place. It's always something.
@@ferengiprofiteer9145 I’m not far from Red River. I’m within a half mile of being in Cooke county. I’m giving up on pawpaws. They don’t like our heat and drought and wind breaks them too easily with their dense canopy and huge leaves.
@@jamesbarron1202 I just discovered, on the way to my place, a neighbor has a couple of big mature persimmons right on the county road so I can get all I want. I'll be spitting seeds from now on. Let the law of averages do the work.
@@ferengiprofiteer9145 I’ve got wild persimmons everywhere. I don’t even like to eat those. I like the big Japanese persimmons. Especially the non astringent types like Fuju. You can eat those when they’re still firm as an apple. They do get sweeter when they get soft though. No seeds either.
Now how long do the seedlings stay in the pots? I planted acorns in a large container. The nuts that rooted I put in pots. I ended up planting about 25 rooted nuts right in the ground. Keep the videos going. I like hearing what other people are doing with the oaks.
These are special containers designed for growing trees that have a hole in the bottom so when the taproot gets to the bottom it tries to go out and is air pruned. Doesn’t hurt the tree. These pots are 18” deep and are 3x3” square. The trees will stay in them for one year then I plan to plant them in the field somewhere.
I am growing some American chestnuts in Europe. Not sure if they are pure but definitely have American ancestry and are not 100% European chestnuts. Also i subscribed
Thank you sir. Have some more videos and should have them uploaded over weekend. Take care.
@@MattPatterson1411 thank you , take care too
I have my doubts whether removing nuts from sapling will prevent predators from eating your saplings, please post the results after you have had them in open space for a while. I would be interested to know what was the outcome.
Will do. I do it every year.
1020 east grove was home for me i remember this i was in the 5th grade. Horrific an tragic
Dang you’re old! 😂 jk. I was only in Kindergarten at the time but remember it like it was yesterday.
Did any of them grow?
Out of all the nuts I planted I got one seedling out of it last year and it ended up dying for some reason. I had planted on using it again this year but had to have surgery on my foot.
@@MattPatterson1411 ok good to know. The squirrels and chipmunks around my area don't play. I stratified a bunch of walnuts and planted with wire mesh protection and they still got them all.
@@NelsonJ1 the planter works. Just need to use it to plant nuts in sufficient quantities to overcome the laws of nature. lol I think I planted over 100 nuts that first year just trying it out and got one tree out of it. But it does what it say it’ll do and it does save your back. Which is the best part!
Can I contact you for an issue we are having with our SIM card? It’s sending our call to voicemail rather than triggering the trap.
If it’s going straight to VM the controller isn’t accepting your call. Most likely a cell signal issue. Does it respond to text commands?
@Matt Is you moms name Banita?
No. Not me
I've seen that same 110 watt panel produce over 100 watts many, many times.
There’s no way that panel is over 90% efficient. Think about it. If it was, you’ve just solved the world’s energy problems. At most panels are 25% efficient depending on their makeup. Most of the energy is lost in the form of heat radiation. A panel that is 100% efficient or close to it is like the holy grail of solar panels.
@@MattPatterson1411 it's absolutely true. There are plenty of videos that prove the same. Your understanding seems a bit off when it comes to efficiency rating. Regardless, there are several panels that produce more wattage than they are rated at, but certainly only under ideal conditions. Most panels are overrated when it comes to wattage, but some companies are actually more honest about it. I have 2 100 watt Harbor Freight rigid panels. They both have shown over 100 watts output (around 106 watts each).
Does it empty the tank? How clean is the fan spray mode?
Not quite but almost. There’s usually a little left in the tank but not much. Fan spray works well.
Thinking about growing some paw paw in Austin, i might have take your advice and get the seedlings vs seeds
Yes, never did have any luck getting those seeds to sprout. I’m sure it was something I did. Will have to do another video once they leaf out this year. Expecting them to really put on some growth now as it will be the second full season in the ground since being transplanted.
Subbed channel has interesting content, hog traps, chests nuts and other dope stuff
Thanks! I enjoy all things outdoors. Very fortunate.
I have a pawpaw loaded with blooms and most of my other pawpaws mostly died from last summer. They were 8’ tall and died to the ground. I watered them every week. They’re in my yard which is terrible soil for pawpaw. Sand and rock. I wanted them close so I could water them easier. I wish I had another one to hand pollinate them. I have now lost 2 pecan trees from last summer. One I planted in the 1980s and the other in the early 90s. That oldest tree blocked the sun off my home. Out of around 100 pecan trees, that’s the one I needed the most. Do you know what your soils PH usually averages? Chestnuts like acidic soil. Mine runs around 5.7 which is unusual for this county. That’s why I planted chestnuts here. I’d try blueberries if they didn’t require so much watering.
It was awesome wasn't it!? I guess that was Jupiter to the lower right. Pretty cool!
Yes it was and yes that was Jupiter. Wish I had been filming when it went dark. I have to admit I didn’t get why everyone was making a big deal out of it at first but I’m glad we got to experience it for sure.
looks like it has features of both the white oak group and the red oak group
I was there still a school kid. It’s as clear as crystal. I’ll never forget.
Awesome video Matt. Thanks for sharing! I am going to try to grow some English White Oaks this year. I have heard they start bearing large acorns that deer love in as early as 7 years grown from seed. I plant all my trees in a similar manner as shown in your video. Good luck and happy growing, Russell Mtns of NC.
They do! I’ve grown some English before but haven’t done any videos on them. They are excellent trees. Good luck.
I planted most of my trees indoors this winter and I just planted a bunch of Tupelo and Mexican Buckeyes in ground today. Just finished at dusk. Planted them for my beehives. I’ve got a bunch of other flowering tree seeds 3 months stratifying. I’ll pot them up this week. I’ve got a bunch of extra Tupelo to sell. I’d have planted those other species this winter also if I’d have found the seeds earlier. I wanted to beat the summer heat and drought. I lost a big Oconee pecan to that horrible summer. I have too many trees to water. What can’t survive will be replaced with more drought resistant species. I planted the Tupelo around my pond. If these Texas summers keep getting worse I’ll be planting cactus I guess. I sold some trees today to a lady who recently moved here from Africa. She said Texas was hotter than Africa. I’d have never thought that.
I don’t bother starting anything indoors. Don’t have the setup for it. I just always wait until it’s warm enough outside and go from there. Sounds like you’ve been busy.
@@MattPatterson1411 I live in a single wide mobile home. I just make the room. I start most in big plastic totes and stack them. I take the ones that sprout outside on days above 50 and bring them in at night. I had over 100 crape myrtles I kept outside all winter and covered with tarps on freezing nights. Weather channel missed a freeze one night and it killed about 20 of them. Channel Fox 4 and the WC said it would be 35 degrees that night.
Just got my first batch of these.
Not many folks know about these trees as they aren’t readily available.
The tree is looking great. I wonder if it will get as big as the American Chestnut. I only just learned about how we lost all these trees; glad you rescued that one.
Chinese trees are short and squatty for the most part. They’ll get tall no doubt but not near as tall as a fully mature upright American.
Sorry to say those aren’t long shots I have longs on my 08 they are at the back of my saddle bags about 6” longer than those are and as loud
Well that’s what it said on the box when they were installed so…. 🤷♂️
Hey Matt. I have started selling the Concordias as bare roots and also potting them. I don't have a picture to put on my website. Would you mind if I did a screen shot of your Concordia to put as a thumbnail? Thank you
Screenshot away my man. I appreciate you asking. If you need a better pic I can take one with my phone once they leaf out this spring.
@@MattPatterson1411 thank you so much! I can't find much on the Internet. I have about 200 to sell. I'm having to educate people about them. No one is familiar with them down South. Thank you
@@troydunn6228 yes not many know about them yet they are one of the best oaks in my opinion. They make beautiful yard trees and are great for wildlife too. Fast growing. All around a great tree.
@@MattPatterson1411 good deal. Thank you for sharing!
Do you lime or fertilize any of your trees? Always enjoy your tree videos. Take Care, Russell MTNS. Of NC.
I’ve tried all different kinds of things but I’ve settled on rabbit manure once a year from my daughters show rabbits. Thanks for the nice comments.
I just fertilized around 100 trees today and one of my chestnuts is fully leafed out. I saw another one that I’m pretty sure is dead. That brutal summer we just had killed most of my pawpaws. The leaves dropped in the heat and they all put on new leaves in the fall and then the cold hit them.
Sweet trees 🌴 I got 100 Dunstan seeds in the fridge I'm going to try and grow some. I got my air prune box built and I'm getting dirt ready to fill it?! I hope they do good cause there pretty expensive to buy already in pots
Sounds like you’re well on your way. I thought about doing a bed but decided to try pots for now.
What a great story! And magnificent trees. Grandpa did good by you all, planting them all those years ago. I've wanted to plant pecan trees, but am borderline just within the ideal climate range. I planted Shagbark hickory instead last year, but they are tiny seedlings and I'll probably never see a harvest lol. I wish I knew about them earlier and planted them 20 years ago.
Thanks
Great looking DCO! Thanks for the video! I planted 3 last year, (they were each about 2 feet tall); then I caged them from deer browsing just in case. Have you noticed deer browsing on your DCO's?
Yes! DCO are prime targets for deer browse and can also be damaged from rubbing. Caging is your best bet until they are much older.
How old are your trees?
About 10-11 years old
What's the difference between Dunstan and European chestnuts? I bought some nuts from the grocery store last fall that were imported from Italy, but my question would be the species of the nut if it came from Italy. I checked the 10 seeds today that I put in the refrigerator last fall and some of them are just starting to sprout.
Same species different genus. Dunstan are Castanea dentata X mollissima and Italian (European) Castanea sativa
I'm in dallas and I built a nest box 3 months ago and today we got our first screech😊😊😊😊
That’s awesome!
Did they end up dropping late?
Yes
How old were they when they started producing?!
About 5yo
@@MattPatterson1411 thank you Matt. I just learned about them. Very nice.
Don't take much to get wore out this time of yr! Nice trees, im gonna start 100 seeds this yr and see what i come up with, gonna pick out the best ones for me and some for my mom's place! Future deer food!😂
Thanks
What kind of soil are you growing in?
Blackland clay. Not the best for chestnuts but they tolerate it
Thanks man I appreciate the tip.
Trees look good Matt
Great video, Matt! A lot of helpful info. I'm currently stratifying a pound of Dunstan seeds, and am now figuring out my next step in the process. I love the use of PVC for the cages. My plants will spend their first year at my home in DFW, before being planted at our place in southern Oklahoma. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for the nice comments. Almost time to get started up again.
Did the little tree hang onto those acorns last fall? I'm very intrigued seeing such a young tree set fruit. I'm adding a bunch to my property. Hoping they will be a good wildlife tree
Yes they did. Going to plant them this spring and see if I can get a few more started.
Do you have a wine diagram? I have the exact same box.
Matt, can you help me hook up the wires on this controller?
Good stuff!

Glad I tripped across this video . The neighbors chinese chestnut flowered great this last spring and by August it lost all its leaves and then out of nowhere it popped out some new leaves , not a tree full, and flowered again in September .
They’ll tend to do that sometimes when they’re stressed. Usually due to lack of water or extreme heat.
Where are you located
NE Texas
Hi! Do you still have any of the acorns to sell? I’m in Tennessee and most places that even sell seedlings are sold out.
Let me check. If I do, they are most likely way past their prime. DCO are notorious for sprouting very early.
